How fun is this room?!

The very first room we completed when moving in to our new home was our playroom. Our daughter (who is 3-years-old) was having a very hard time transitioning from the home she has known her whole life in to a new one. So for us it was a no-brainer that we should start in here and make her feel more “at home” in her new home.
Here is a “Before” picture of the room. Unfortunately I didn’t take that many pictures and you can’t quite tell the shape the room was in. Lets just say, it wasn’t pretty. The carpet had to go and the double doors leading in to the room were damaged. The glorious earth themed fan came with the house, and actually, I love it. It was the only light fixture in the entire house that stayed!
I get quite a few questions about my metal PLAY letters. I bought these from Hobby Lobby while they had a 50% off sale on their Metal Wall Decor. I LOVE Hobby Lobby and I find a lot of decor items from their store. I have the app on my phone and I like to look at the weekly ads as soon as they become available and I always buy my decor from them when it is on sale. They have a new 50% sale each week, and it rotates constantly.
I also get asked about why I chose the rubber mats. I will be honest… Because I already had them! They were a gift and because our toddler is in prime “Playdough” age they work a little bit better for us than a regular rug would in this room. Eventually I would like to add a playful Chevron rug, so if you see a fun one that you think would match this room PLEASE let me know!!
See those beautiful “wood” floors? I added them myself! For about $100 per room! Woohoo!! Expect a post soon on that!
I LOVE the chalkboard walls that I added in the room. They bring such a fun element to the room and they are SO easy. (I put a link to the chalkboard paint I used below, but if you are not ready to commit to painting a wall I found a chalkboard wall decal that had amazing reviews for a great price which I also linked below!)
Chalkboard Wall Tips: Apply 2 coats and wait 24 hours in-between coats. Then take a large piece of chalk and cover the entire surface with chalk after the second coat is dry. Then use a rag to wipe all of the chalk off. This “primes” the wall and makes it ready for the first time you write on it. Without priming it first you will notice that whatever you first write or draw on the wall will not erase completely.
Can you believe I found that circus poster in the back of a storage unit and paid $0.25 for it?! When storage unit owners have “garage sales” you can usually find amazing deals on really unique things! Check Craigslist or your local paper for sales in your area!
Another favorite thing in this room is the “chair rail” I added on top of the half-chalkboard wall. Our daughter loves to read and has TONS of books, and book storage has always been an issue. I wanted a way to have them on display for her to easily find and I came up with the idea of using picture ledges as book storage and as a wall divider! Double win!
The picture ledges I used are from Ikea, but I know most areas do not have an Ikea close to them so I have placed links below for some similar products I have found that you could use instead! The second link is a clear set I found that looks awesome!
I’m a “neutral decor” loving type of girl, which is one of the reasons I love our daughter’s bright and happy playroom. The rest of our home has little to no color decor (aside from whites, woods and grays), but I went with the primary colored theme in here because I found so many pieces that matched it! I know eventually I will want to change it to something more cohesive with the rest of our home, but for now, I love it. Finding the kites and playroom signs helped make this room playful and fun!
Thumb tacks + Clothes Pins from the Target Dollar Spot + A piece of colored yarn = Kids art display!
For now the double doors have been removed and I am leaving the space open. Eventually I will build a large sliding barn door for the area!
